Kappa Search Inc. is a Chicago recruiting agency that specializes in the recruitment and placement of engineering, sales, technology, manufacturing and supply chain professionals. We are currently recruiting for a Materials Manager for a client in the plastic products industry.

The Materials Manager directs and coordinates the day-to-day material operations including forecasting, master scheduling, tactical purchasing, production control and material planning.  This position is also a leadership role that will drive improvement programs and the implementation of best practices in the discipline of material and value stream management.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  •  Develop and execute the material management action plans required to achieve the department goals related to inventory turns, inventory levels, customer service levels and operating profit.
  • Support and help implement the policies, procedures, systems and programs required to meet the department objectives and to ensure continuous improvement in all material management and supply planning areas.
  • Supervise the material management team consisting of buyers, planners, master schedulers, forecasters and clerks.
  • Select, develop, and evaluate personnel to ensure the effective operation of the material planning functions. This will include coaching and mentoring the materials team for optimal results and associate development.
  • Participates and drives daily management meetings
  • Develops and implements DMP and Kanban implementation schedules
  • Lead and manage cross-functional teams related to planning and purchasing initiatives and continuous improvement programs.
  • Support Production, Supply and Inventory (PSI) process including the Pre-PSI Supply Planning activities.
  • Support the Level 3 Materials Policy Deployment process including leading the monthly meetings with strategic purchasing and plant associates.
  • Work collaboratively with manufacturing plant management to support the Kaizen schedules and other improvement activity plans and visions.
  • Participate and drive the material planning activities in the new product development teams
  • Develop the root cause/countermeasures for customer service levels (backorders) and inventory reduction including the follow through of target dates.
  • Have strong knowledge of planning/pull systems and MRP concepts such as time fences, demand input, consumption rules, AMU and projected balance calculations.
  • Have strong knowledge of lean manufacturing, DBS tools and JIT principles and be able to effectively apply them in the appropriate situations.
  • Develop the short and long term unit and dollar inventory projections at the raw, sub-assembly, WIP and finished good levels.
  • Evaluate the production plans, plant capacities and supplier capacities data and determine trends, resource requirements and constraints.
  • Work closely with other department leaders (Manufacturing, Finance, R and D, Product Mgmt, Strategic Purchasing, Quality, Sales and Marketing, Regulatory, Process Engineering) to communicate and coordinate cross-functional efforts and improvement activities.
  • Interacts and influences both internal and external teams from the executive to the individual contributor in order to establish and execute global material strategies.

  • 4 Year Bachelor degree required, Operations or Business preferred
  • MBA Preferred (Finance or Operations)
  • APICS Certification Preferred
  • 7+ years experience in materials planning, production control and/or purchasing.
  • 3+ years experience in a supervisory position related to materials planning, production control, purchasing, forecasting and/or master scheduling


  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills
  • Strong knowledge of MRP, CRP and MPS.
  • Experience with lean concepts/tools such as VSM, Kanban, JIT and Kaizen
  • Understanding of production flow principles and manufacturing processes
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively work with many levels and types of people
  • Good written, oral and presentation skills(communication)
